25th August 2021. The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) has appointed Peter Martin as the new Station Manager at NCI Bass Point, the original NCI station on the Cornish Lizard peninsula.
Mr Martin, who has been involved with NCI for 16 years, was previously Deputy Station Manager and takes over from retiring station manager, Peter Clements. Speaking about his appointment, Mr martin said: “I am pleased to be taking on this role at a time when the importance of NCI’s manned lookouts is plain to see. With so many people taking their holidays in Cornwall this year we have been busier than ever – both at sea and on the coast path. Our watch keepers play a key role in the national search and rescue infrastructure and, with the station manned 365 days a year, we are always keen to hear from those potential new watch keepers who want to play their part in the organisation." Peter went on to pay tribute to his predecessor, adding: "I would like to offer sincere thanks to Peter Clements on behalf of everyone in NCI.
Bass Point became the first NCI lookout in 1994 when the organisation was formed, following the death of two fishermen from nearby Cadgwith Cove. Since then, the institution has grown and now has 57 stations around the shores of England and Wales, providing the “Eyes and Ears along the coast”.
