17th January 2018 The renowned international thriller writer Peter James paid a visit to the NCI station at Newhaven as part of his research into his latest novel and was shown around the station by Station Manager David Crozier and his team
Mr James said "Research very important when writing my Roy Grace novels and this week I spent a fascinating time at the National Coastwatch Institution Newhaven Lookout, thanks to Station Manager David Crozier and his great team. This is an entirely voluntary organization of highly trained individuals, funded purely by donations. Just like my recent time with the Newhaven Lifeboat, I came away with immense respect for David and his team - for their dedication, their professionalism and for their sheer decency in doing a vital job entirely without charge. Last year the National Coastwatch dealt with almost 500 emergency situations in England, and undoubtedly saved very many lives, but sadly have also dealt with many tragedies too. From this 40’ high lookout on top of a hill to the west of Newhaven Harbour, they watch fourteen miles out to sea, and many miles of coast either side. As well as helping swimmers, windsurfers, hikers and boats in difficulties they also keep watch on passing planes and ships looking out for boats that might be up to no good”.
