SURPRISE GIFT FROM WATCH KEEPER GIVES NCI PENZANCE A GREAT VIEW

18th July 2018. An unexpected gift from a member of NCI Penzance will help save lives.

Watchkeeper Vic Elgood surprised his colleagues at the National Coastwatch Institution station at Penzance when he announced that he had bought the station a webcam that will provide a live feed to the station. This camera has been installed at the Queens Hotel on the promenade at Penzance and from here can provide a live webcam feed covering the full sweep of Mounts Bay from St Michaels Mount and Marazion beach around to the busy harbours of Newlyn and Mousehole. Although the camera is mounted on the Queens Hotel and features on their web site and inside the hotel, it is controlled remotely from the Penzance NCI lookout who have a large screen display in their station. This webcam can zoom in to watch over the people using Marazion beach or the vessels entering Newlyn harbour.

Mr Elgood paid for the camera and installation himself as a gift to the station and commented that he had originally intended to leave a bequest to the station, but by providing the camera he can enjoy using the equipment himself and, more importantly, it can start saving lives now. NCI Penzance Station Manager Dave Stevens said “We are overwhelmed by Mr Elgood’s generosity, especially as it came as a complete surprise. Vic, on behalf of everyone at NCI Penzance, a very big Thank You.”
