NEW COASTWATCH STATION TO OPEN IN TORBAY

29 July 2009 The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) is planning to open a new station at Daddyhole Plain, Torbay. The old watchtower has now been demolished and a new building is under construction with greater height giving it a commanding view over Torbay and out to sea.

A public meeting has been organised for Thursday 6 August at 7.00pm at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club to introduce the project in detail for the benefit of volunteers who would like to join NCI as watchkeepers or supporters. All are welcome to attend the meeting and take part in this interesting and worthwhile activity dedicated to enhancing safety within the wide area viewed from the station. It will complement other stations along the Devon coast at Exmouth, Teignmouth, Froward Point and Prawle Point, making a total of 44 stations around the coastline manned by over 1,700 volunteers. NCI is a registered charity involved in the protection and preservation of life at sea and around the UK coastline.

Commenting on the establishment of the Torbay station, Jon Gifford, NCI Chairman said: "The preparation involved in developing this station has been lengthy but we are now keen to proceed with the training of volunteers and plan to commence operations in later in the year. Further details of this will be given at the meeting."
