PORTHDINLLAEN OPEN FOR BUSINESS

5 April 2010 The first National Coastwatch station in North Wales has been opened  by Vivian Jones, the widow of a local fisherman drowned in the sea close to Porthdinllaen a few years ago. NCI has more than 40 stations operating around the UK including three in South Wales.

The lookout at Porthdinllaen was originally an operational Coast Guard station until closed for economic reasons about twenty years ago. Since its closure, it had fallen into disrepair although the sea and coastal leisure activities in the area have increased considerably. NCI identified the derelict station as an ideal site about two years ago and negotiated a lease with the Nefyn Golf Club, owners of the station. With their support, together with an NCI grant and a successful lottery application, the station was renovated and equipped. Following an initial local public meeting and press support, volunteers were recruited and trained ready to become operational after the official opening on 3 April.

The station will be operational initially at weekends and Bank Holidays throughout the summer months and then, as more volunteers are recruited and trained, it is planned to be operational during all daylight hours throughout the summer.
