24th June 2016. Situated on the South West Coat Path, NCI St Albans welcomes visitors throughout the year. Three times a year - on the Easter, late May and August bank holiday weekends - the lookout promotes open days when visitors are given a drink and a home-baked cake. Scores of visitors visit the lookout on each day, and this has proved to be an excellent way of raising awareness of the role of the NCI as well as raising much needed funds thanks to the generosity of the visitors.
Late on the Sunday afternoon of the recent late May bank holiday weekend, a visitor came to the door. Ann, the ‘host watchkeeper’ for that watch, welcomed him and his wife and spoke with them for forty minutes at the end of the watch, after which he was happy to sign the visitors' book. When they had left, one of Ann’s fellow-watchkeepers said to her, 'He looked just like Jeremy Corbyn’, to which the response was ‘Yes, it was him’. Ann had recognised him at once but very sensibly treated him just like any other visitor. Ann reports that he was very interested indeed in what we do and how we do it – and he made a significant donation!
