NCI ST IVES REPORT SIGHTINGS OF 400 DOLPHINS

16th August 2020. A “Superpod” of up to 400 dolphins was spotted off the coast of Cornwall at the weekend prompting conservationists to suggest the decrease in commercial shipping during the pandemic has helped boost sightings.

The volunteer watchkeepers at the National Coastwatch Institution station at St Ives in Cornwall reported seeing pods of 300-400 dolphins off the coast this weekend. The dolphins were apparently playing to a gallery of tourist boats about a mile out in the bay.

St Ives watchkeeper Neil Harvey said “The water this weekend is crystal clear, so its easy to spot the dolphins. Its literally been a total mass and the trip boats are loving it”
