NCI SHOREHAM OPERATIONAL

15 December 2008 Following a busy twelve month period of building, recruiting, fund raising and training, NCI Shoreham is now operational.

The official opening was attended by NCI Chairman Jon Gifford, Harbour Master Colin Crookshank, RNLI Operations manager Chris Bunby and all the NCI members connected with the new station. Shoreham Beach Residents Association Chairman John Bradshaw also attended, along with crew members from the Fisheries Patrol vessel ‘Watchful’.

Local residents and yacht clubs in the area have shown great interest, support and encouragement towards the development of the once dilapidated building into a much needed look out station.

Pauline Bradbury, Station Manager, is ultimately responsible for the station including its running, maintenance, recruitment, and training of all NCI volunteers.

The emphasis is now on recruitment and continued funding for running costs. The station has several qualified watch keepers enabling it to operate on Saturdays and Sundays during daylight hours with Wednesdays and Thursdays being training days.

All this has taken valuable time and effort given voluntarily by all involved. There is a great team spirit and the camaraderie extends beyond the station to surrounding organisations, marinas and sailing clubs connected with the port, especially the port control team and the RNLI station both of which are located close to the look out.

Shoreham Port Authority, owner of the land and the building, has been extremely supportive of the building project and the operation of the station in a partnership that will help both parties to ensure a safer environment for the inshore waters off this part of the Sussex coastline.
